Pokémon is a series of video games, card games, and a successful anime about young children who travel across the outside world to capture and tame powerful beasts known as Pokémon. Why they do it is because there apparently isn't much else to do. With these Pokémon, the young children then force their Pokémon to do battle with other Pokémon owned by other children in a duel to the death to make the other Pokémon "faint." Though the anime is enough to give viewers the wrong idea that fighting is O.K., they still manage to justify it by saying they don't really die.
The Games

In the regular games made by Nintendo & Game Freak, you head out into the world of {insert region here} to capture Pokémon, travel through cities and collect 8 badges before competing in the Pokémon League and fighting the Elite 4. Of course, it isn't that straightforward. Along the way you get wrapped up in the nefarious deeds of various criminal organizations (Like, for example, Team Rocket.), and you'll have to compete against your rival who you can name, which you'll likely give them a rude one.
In every "generation" of the games, they release two (Three for the first generation in Japan.) "versions" of the game simultaneously, both of which play almost exactly alike. The only major difference is that there are Pokémon exclusive to one of the two versions. A year or so later they release a new version that has extended features, except in Gen V where they made two sequels. If you're the typical Pokemon player, you strive for emulating what the game's subtitle is, that is, "Catching 'Em all." With one version alone, you can only catch a certain amount, and to catch them all, you need to get another Game Boy/Game Boy Advance/DS/(lite)/(i)/(i XL)/3DS/whatever and link the two games together, or just have friends. But even then, that isn't enough, as they throw in one or more legendary Pokémon that cannot be captured in the game by conventional means (see Mew). That is, without cheats or glitches.
With each new generation, they add a bunch of new Pokémon, further hindering your progress to "Catch 'Em All." By the Third Generation, the Pokémon in the second aren't even in the game, so your hard work is, unfortunately, at a loss.

The Anime
The main character of the anime is named Ash Ketchum, who has a Pikachu and it's been like that for over 15 years and over 800 episodes, with the number of Pokémon changing from a normal and simple 150 to a huge and unprecedented 718. Ash hasn't grown at all since Episode 1. Like many other children's cartoons out there, there is very little plot development that goes on, but that never stopped the millions of little kids that watch this.
Characters
Here's a list of all (or at least, most of) the Pokémon.
- Ash Ketchum - A ten-year-old boy (or at least that's what he was in the first season) that aspires to become a Pokémon Master, but he never will because they just keep making more games and seasons.
- Pikachu - Ash's favorite Pokémon, and the series mascot.
- Professor Oak - That guy who sends innocent children out into the wild to capture a bunch of vicious monsters.
- Gary Oak - Ash's douchebag of a rival. He is Professor Oak's grandson and has a permanent cold. Is now a Pokémon doctor or something like that.
- Misty - Wants to fuck Ash, but he is too busy aspiring to become a Pokémon Master to concern himself with his virginity.
- Brock - An experienced chef, has an unhealthy obsession with women.
- Delia Ketchum - MILF!!!
- Jessie, James, & Meowth - The cross-dressing losers that spend all their time on giant robots in order to steal a mouse.
- Butch and Cassidy - Rivals of Jessie and James who are much more competent. However, they do not have a talking cat.
- May - She's got a pretty decent chest for a ten-year-old.
- Max - Underage kid who's not Sam's sidekick.
- Dawn - Think of her as May minus the decent chest, and with an incredibly short skirt. Good Lord, think of all the loli fans she's created...
- Paul - Another rival of Ash from Sinnoh, who doesn't treat his Pokémon well, and often releases them for the stupidest reasons. Maybe if you gave your Pokémon mercy, they'd learn from their losses...
- Iris - A black Dawn who usually refers to Ash as a kid, despite him being probably double her age by now. Also sounds like that one part of the eye...
- Cilan - Another former gym leader turned partner in Ash's journeys. He also constantly refers to shit in food and even movie terms in a very pretentious manner.
- Serena - A childhood friend of Ash he managed to completely forget about for over
1510 years. - Clemont - Wacky inventor with a citrus twist.
- Bonnie - Underage kid who's not Clyde's sidekick.
- Nurse Joy - A nurse who heals Pokemon.... and is one of the TWO PERFECT GIRLS for Brock.
- Officer Jenny - What's the point of a police force in the Pokemon world? She too is one of the TWO PERFECT GIRLS for Brock even though he wants to be a one-woman man.
- Jimmy - A dude in a red sweatshirt who sounds suspiciously like Goku,and owns a Typhlosion. Only seen in the Legend of Thunder.

- Jason Paige, the singer of the original Pokemon Theme (and therefore one of the most awesome people in the world), went on to perform covers for "Canned Heat" and "Walkie-Talkie Man" in Elite Beat Agents.
- In the game, bikes are ridiculously expensive, which helps support why Ash will never pay off Misty so she could get a new one.
- It's the second-most sold video game franchise around. It's right after the Super Mario Bros. series. (OF COURSE!!!)
- In Pokemon, there are various trainers that cheat, the most notable being Ash Ketchum (who never wins gym battles fairly) and Lance (who hacked to get a level 50 Dragonite when Dragonite evolves at level 55).
- In the late '90s, the series was actually defended from criticism by Pope John Paul II and the Roman Catholic Church.
