Sony Vegas is a very popular program used to make YouTube Poop videos. It is used by an enormous array of poopers; so many in fact that a list of community members who do not use this is smaller (usually, these people are WMM masters or Adobe Premiere users). Was originally made by Sonic Foundry under the names VideoFactory and Screenblast until Sony bought them.

Advantages

Over Windows Movie Maker

  • Simple reverse effect, in WMM a reverse effect is possible but it requires timing in cutting the clips small enough and rearrange the clips. The end result comes out jerky and unpolished.
  • More visual customization (lots of visual effects suitable for teching. Movie Maker can have these but it requires plugins.)
  • Able to have other methods of Ear Rape
  • Audio effects including the pitch shift, popular for YTPMVs (Pitch shift only exists in WMM XP and even then it can only be done by speeding up or slowing down a clip with it.)
  • More reliable in that the program does not crash as often as WMM. Vegas rarely crashes unless either it is an intense video such as the MycroProcessor/GameBop variety of visual and audio art, an audio effect or a dodgy clip.
  • Generated media
  • Lady parts

Over Adobe Premiere

  • Doesn't lock up or crash as much (unless you're creating a "mind screw" video).
  • Can be run on less powerful computers

Other Nice things

Sony Vegas at work.
  • Importing an MP4 into Sony Vegas can result in a very nice effect. This is just having fun with a glitch.
  • G Major can be done by simply duplicating a subclip into say 4 copies and changing the pitch of each subclip exponentially.
  • The ability to bypass motion blur. Ever annoyed by how you can't actually see something moving smoothly in your final video?

Where you see the track number on the timeline, over to the right you will see a button that says "Bypass motion blur". This will make each individual frame of the video seen and recognizable. This is only recommended for a source that is in good quality and was just made. If this doesn't work just right click on your clip in the timeline and press properties. By default it will be set to "smart resample" but that's fucking gay. What you wanna do is set it to "disable resample".

With bypass motion blur it doesn't matter if your source is 12fps and and your project is 30fps. It'll be fine and inbetween movements won't be hindered. Who the shit came up with motion blur anyway? It's only cool within dramatic events so forcing it on every project is lame. Bad Sony, Bad.

  • Veg replace! This allows you to throw any source in place of any source that is missing. It doesn't have to be the same file and it will work error-free. It ain't rocket science! Just move your source to another folder and Vegas will go bonkers like Micheal Jackson wondering where his nose went. Replace boy! Replace! This is when you pick your video you want in place of the source you just removed.

Criticism

Sony Vegas is not without its flaws. Since most people use it, other poopers believe that a lot of poops end up coming out as "the same", with poops becoming less creative compared to the earlier eras where Vegas was not often used. This claim has been challenged in recent times; various poopers have claimed that a poop's style is not created by the software used, but by the pooper himself/herself. Some other, less opinionated flaws are listed below.

Disadvantages

  • The mp3 plugin can't be activated in Vegas 5
  • Some poopers have reported disappearing sound/visuals when using certain file types (particularly AVI)
  • Has to build audio proxies when you open it up

Differences Between Vegas Pro and Vegas Movie Studio

Sony Vegas comes in two different versions: Vegas Pro and Vegas Movie Studio. Both have similar UIs and effects plugins. Some Differences are listed below.

  • Movie Studio is much cheaper than Pro. Movie Studio costs about $80-$90, but Pro costs about $599.
  • Pro can use an unlimited number of tracks. Movie Studio 10 can only use 20 tracks, less tracks are avalible if you have an older version.
  • Only Pro versions have a masking tool.
  • Pro versions can edit at 60 frames per second (fps) instead of 30 fps.
  • Pro can add audio effects to individual events. Movie Studio has to add audio effects to an entire track.

Where to Find

Sony Vegas can be obtained legally through websites like eBay or Amazon, or possibly at various software retailers.

There is also the option of downloading it but, uh... that's technically piracy. (though that doesn't stop YouChew's media library from having plenty of free downloads for it...)

Notable Sony Vegas Users

A large number of poopers use Sony Vegas. But, hey, here's a selection:
