Mario Kart is a racing game series featuring various characters from various Mario games. Since the Super NES, there has been a Mario Kart game on every single Nintendo home console, and eventually on the Game Boy Advance and the Nintendo DS.

The series spans 9 games on the Super NES, the Nintendo 64, the Game Boy Advance, the Nintendo Gamecube, the Nintendo DS, the Nintendo Wii, the Nintendo 3DS, and even 2 arcade games.

In 2011, a future Mario Kart game will be released for the Nintendo 3DS.

Games

• Super Mario Kart (1992, SNES): The first of the Mario Kart series. The game used Nintendo's Mode 7 technology. Is the only one of its kind to have 5 tracks per cup. Can be bought on the Wii's Virtual Console.
• Mario Kart 64 (1997, N64): The second Mario Kart game. Unlike its predecessor, the levels were rendered in full 3D polygons, though the characters were still sprites. Can also be bought on the Wii's Virtual Console.
• Mario Kart: Super Circuit (2001, GBA): The third game in the series, and the first handheld version. Was more like Super Mario Kart in the sense that the game used the Mode 7 technology instead of polygons. Is the only Mario Kart to feature 5 cups instead of the usual 4. Also features tracks from Super Mario Kart. If you were a 3DS Ambassador (owner before the $80 price cut), you could grab this game (again) for free!
• Mario Kart: Double Dash!! (2003, GCN): The 4th game in the series. It was the first game in the series to rely solely on 3D instead of sprites, and was also the only game where 2 characters could be used at once. It also allowed LAN play.
• Mario Kart DS (2005, DS): The 5th game in the series, and the 2nd handheld game. Was the first Mario Kart game to have official online play, and the second to allow retro tracks from past games. Was also infamous for the act of snaking, where mini-turbos from drifting were abused.
• Mario Kart Arcade GP (2005, Arcade): The first of the 2 arcade Mario Kart games, and the 6th overall. The machines featured a camera for taking pictures of the player, and some machines offered a magnetic card for saving data. And Pac-Man. Can't forget him.
• Mario Kart Arcade GP 2 (2007, Arcade): The second of the 2 arcade Mario Kart games, and the 7th overall. Basically, it's more of the same here, except for the fact that there's more Pac-Man characters and a Tamagatchi character, as well as four more tracks from the original arcade game.
• Mario Kart Wii (2008, Wii): The 8th game overall, and the only one to allow motorcycles. Offered control with the Wii wheel in addition to the classic, nunchuck, and Gamecube controller. Like Mario Kart DS, it offered online play. Unlike Mario Kart DS, snaking was made more difficult, mainly to prevent its exploitation.
• Mario Kart 7 (2011, 3DS): The 9th overall game that will be coming out in December of 2011. It's 7th for this game because Nintendo doesn't want to count the arcade games as official Mario Kart games for some odd reason. Revealed features include 3D, a constant 60 FPS frame rate, the return of coins, underwater races, a hang glider attachment, a first-person driving mode, new Fire Flower (which was already in Double Dash!! as Mario, Luigi, Petey Piranha, and King Boo's special items), Super (Raccoon) Leaf, and Lucky 7 items; having some courses no longer necessarily having the three laps needed for completion, and more customization to karts. Confirmed characters include Mario, Luigi, Peach, Daisy, Toad, Yoshi, Donkey Kong, Koopa Troopa, Bowser, Wario, Rosalina, your Mii, Metal Mario, Shy Guy, Wiggler (the final boss from Mario Kart DS), Queen Honey (that queen bee bitch from the Super Mario Galaxy games), and even Lakitu! Other characters have yet to be confirmed. It's been confirmed to be the second Mario Kart game (first being Mario Kart: Super Circuit) to have two different Rainbow Road tracks. Recently, an advertisement by Gamestop says that the game will be rated E10 instead of the usual E rating. Nothing about it is confirmed, but it's something interesting to note.

• The characters that have appeared in ervy single mario Kart game are Mario, Luigi, Peach, Yoshi, & Bowser.
• If you have a save game from Super Mario Galaxy, you can unlock Rosalina at a faster pace in Mario Kart Wii.
• Since Mario Kart 64, there have been 3 classes: Light, Medium, and Heavy.
• Wizardheimer was going to be in Mario Kart 64, until he started sending the staff to the dungeon, which caused him to be replaced.
• One of the lightweight karts in Mario Kart Wii is Captain Falcon's Blue Falcon, believe it or not.
• In Mario Kart DS, the most popular character/kart combination is either Yoshi or Dry Bones in the Egg Kart.
  • For Mario Kart Wii, the most popular character/kart combination would be Funky Kong with a Flame Runner (Bowser Bike) or the Torpedo.
• In Mario Kart DS, it had R.O.B. the Robot as a bonus character, Wiggler as a boss character, and Shy Guy as a Vs. character only.
• On Mario Kart Wii, you can unlock the ability to play as your Mii. The voice of your Mii in the game depends on your Mii's sex, size, and favourite colour.
