In the Anime
Pikachu is Ash's first (and favorite) Pokemon who is annoying beyond comprehension of the human mind. It has tendencies to constantly electrocute various people with voltages that usually would be fatal, but it's an anime intended for young viewers. Ash is so completely stupid NOT to let him evolve to Raichu. Raichu is far less annoying and can beat the shit out of Pikachu any day.
For some silly reason, Team Rocket spends their life attempting to capture Pikachu, especially Ash's Pikachu in Particular, often in the form of cliche traps such as pits in the ground or even as far as giant robots.
