Description
Bionicle is a series of products by Lego that has its own original story that was told through various forms of multimedia including video games, flash animations, movies, comics, and more. It became one of Lego's most popular and most sold line products, also saving the company from its financial crisis in the late nineties and early two-thousands mostly due to the designs of the sets themselves as well as being one of the first lines of Lego sets involving an actual storyline. The first generation of Bionicle started in 2001 and ended back in 2010. Its short-lived second generation started in 2014 after the first generation's successor Hero Factory ended in 2015 but ended up being discontinued in 2016.
Characters
- Mata Nui: The Great Spirit whose ENORMOUS body holds all of the islands that the Matoran inhabit, he was put into a deep sleep and was supposed to be awoken but ended up being exiled to another planet by Makuta. However, near the end of Bionicle's first run he managed to ally himself with the inhabitants of the shithole he was trapped on and find the components for another giant robot body which he used to kick Makuta's sorry ass. In the newest incarnation of Bionicle, he was renamed 'Ekimu' and he is a mask maker who built masks of power but much like his predecessor, he got put into a coma by Makuta only to be re-awakened to fight Skull Grinder and Umarak the Destroyer (Formerly known as Umarak the Hunter) as well as acting as a guide for the Toa.
- The Toa: The main heroes of Bionicle, they have elemental powers that are organized by color (IE: Blue is water, White is Ice, Red is Fire, etc.) along with 'Kanohi Masks' that give them all sorts of powers such as X-Ray vision and Energy Shields. For the first generation, there have been three lines of Toa, all of which have been reconfigured for new parts of the Bionicle Storyline. The current generation of Toa are revamps of the original line of Toa who are known as 'Elemental Masters/Uniters'.
- The Matoran: The diminutive inhabitants/citizens of the Bionicle universe, much like the Toa they have their own masks and colors corresponding to the element in their home region. Matoran don't have any elemental powers HOWEVER they can become Toa depending on the circumstances. In the latest incarnation of Bionicle, they are just known as 'Villagers'.
- Rahi: Rahi are the equivalent of wild-life in the Bionicle universe with their designs being often based off of real-world animals including Birds, Fish, Spiders, Scorpions, Insects, and more. Some are friendly but others not so much. So far in Generation 2 there have been a few hostile equivalents including the skull spiders, skull scorpions, and shadow traps. However, there are friendly creatures that can be 'united' with the 'elemental masters/uniters'.
- The Makuta: The main antagonist(s), these guys are pretty much beings of darkness that are encased in biomechanical physical bodies and much like the Toa they have their own Kanohi masks. Originally there was ONE Makuta but eventually Greg Farshtey revealed the existence of other similar beings and designated the one of the main story as 'Teridax', this caused a major uproar among Bionicle fans for the longest period of time. The new incarnation of Makuta is a mask-maker much like Ekimu, however he became corrupted by his creation the so-called 'Mask Of Ultimate Power' and unlike in G1 he was also put into a coma along with Ekimu. However, he is still able to command his minions from afar as he did with Umarak.
- The Turaga: These old farts were Toa that either completed their 'destiny' or sacrificed their powers for the greater good. They act as leaders of the Matoran AND as guides for newer Toa. It is assumed that the 'Protectors' of the various villagers take the place of the Turaga in Generation 2 of Bionicle.
- The Piraka: Introduced in 2006, these guys were trying to steal the mask of life from Voya Nui, despite the fact it would've ended up killing Mata Nui. Rather than their sets having masks they had 'skull' pieces with glow-in-the-dark teeth, an orange LED eyepiece, and a rubber piece to serve as the head and spine. They were defeated by the Toa Inika.
- The Barraki: Introduced in the middle of 2007, these fellows were once despotic warlords that were banished to the pit by Mata Nui where they mutated into new forms resembling a variety of sea creatures and were armed with weapons that shot vampiric sea squids. And you thought Lampreys were bad, eh?
- The Glatorian: Introduced in 2009 and 2010, the Glatorian are warrior-like humanoids similar to the Toa but from the planet Bara Magna. They are usually armed with a variety of weapons but always tend to have a Thornax launchers.
- The Agori: Introduced in 2009, Agori are essentially the maskless counterparts of the Matoran on Bara Magna. Enough said.
