Mushrooms are fungi that feed off of decomposed plants. You can often see them in grassy, wet areas with a lot of dead leaves. Eat only the mushrooms you find a stores, not in the wild, unless it is a morel. Some edible Mushrooms are used by Chefs for certain foods. In the United States, the commonwealth of Pennsylvania is the leading mushroom producer, producing about 65% of American mushrooms, with mushroom production centralized in Kennett Square.

In Mario's world, if Mario eats them, he becomes larger (not in that way, you queer!). Luigi also eats them.

Watch-out for poisonous mushrooms, though, as they can make you shrink. In the real world, they melt your liver and you die a slow painful death.

You can escape from The pit if you eat enough green mushrooms.

Mushrooms are also used as a makeshift drug in some cases, usually as a replacement for Lysegic Acid Dithylimide.

A Mario world 'shroom. Red mushrooms make you grow in size (or gives speed boosts to your car), green give you an extra life, blue or black shrinks you, and gold gives you a lot of speed boosts for your car.
