Mario eats them, and becomes larger (not in that way, you Faggot!). Luigi also eats them. Not only that, but some edible Mushrooms are used by Chefs for certain foods. In the United States, the commonwealth of Pennsylvania is the leading mushroom producer.
Watch-out for poisonous mushrooms, though, as they can make you shrink. In the real world, they melt your liver and you die a slow painful death.
Mushrooms are also used as a makeshift drug in some cases.
