Atari was created in 1972 by Nolan Bushnell and Ted Dabney. Their first game was Computer Space, which was hindered by unreliability, and was never popular. In 1973, Atari would release Pong, which would be their first hit, selling many machines, and becoming a classic. This would be followed by many other popular games, such as Breakout (which was designed by Steve Jobs, with the hardware engineered by Steve Wozniak, both of Apple fame), and others, including a home Pong in 1975.
In 1977, Atari released the Atari 2600, a home console that could take programmable cartridges. The Atari 2600 would last all the way until 1992.
In 1982 they created the Swordquest games as part of a contest, featuring ridiculously expensive prizes made of Gold, Platinum, and other rare metals. Only 2 of the 4 prizes were released due to monetary issues and the video game crash of 1983.
