Neon Genesis Evangelion is a highly famous and controversial "giant robot" anime series produced by Studio Gainax (a company also known for FLCL and Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann). The series begins lighthearted, but as it progresses, the series gradually becomes highly dark, depressing, graphic, highly symbolic/psychological, twisted, and most of all, confusing. Despite this, many people love it to death and hope for a continuation. The best example is the movie, End of Evangelion.
By some coincidence, the creator (Hideaki Anno) was seriously depressed and in therapy in the middle of the show. HMM...
