These sources were produced as the 1980s were drawing to a close, as was communism.
Politically, the year 1989 was the year that saw some of the most change in history, with the fall of the Communist Polish, Czechoslovakian, East German, and Romanian governments, which were replaced by more democratic governments with less control of the economy. In addition, the political oppression in China reached the mainstream press when student protests in Tienanmen Square were brought down using military force.
