Trigun
Summary
An anime and manga series about a legendary outlaw named Vash the Stampede, who is actually a pacifist and a big crybaby, and all the property damage was only caused by his incredible bad luck. Two insurance agents are sent to keep him under control. Hilarity ensues. But then sadness ensues, as we find out about Vash's mysterious past, and learn about his well intentioned extremist twin brother Knives. The manga follows the same idea, but becomes radically different from the anime at a certain point, and has two characters that never appear in the anime. The beginning of the anime is an action comedy at heart, but gets serious later on. The first manga from which the beginning of the anime is based on, simply titled "Trigun", is pure action comedy. The manga's sequel, Trigun Maximum, is dark and mostly character development, plot, and action based, but there's a generous sprinkling of series staple comedic scenes to even out the tension. The latter parts of the series has a strong theme of extreme pacifism vs. kill or be killed.
Main Characters
- Vash the Stampede: A bandit who refuses to kill and just wants to be loved. He loves doughnuts. Puts on a facade of being a happy-go-lucky doofus to hide his depression. He's suffered. A lot.
- Meryl Stryfe or Strife: Kind of a bitch. In the manga, she's much nicer, but in turn has less of a personality. She was one of the insurance agents sent to keep Vash under control.
- Milly Thompson: Meryl's partner who is unusually tall and muscular for a woman. She carried a huge stun gun. She's a ditz and she loves pudding.
- Nicholas D Wolfwood: A badass chainsmoking priest who always wants to make sure the children are kept safe. He's Vash's best friend. He has a much more interesting backstory in the manga.
- Millions Knives: Vash's twin brother and the main antagonist of the series. He wanted to kill all of humanity, but he had good intentions and just wanted to help plants so it's totally justified, okay guys. He does turn over a new leaf in the ending of the manga, but it's unclear what happens to him in the end and it's up to interpretation.
- Legato Bluesummers: Knives' most loyal servant, who in the manga, is implied to have a crush okn Knives.. He is very, very creepy and enjoys eating junk food. In the manga, his backstory is delved into, and he's even more creepy in the manga. He has an obsession with pleasing Knives despite being fully aware that Knives would probably kill him without a mere thought had he not been so useful. In the manga, it was actually Legato that sent the Gung-Ho Guns after Vash without Knives's permission. In response Knives breaks every bone in his body when he found out. Legato has the power to control the movements of other people, so he can still fight despite being disabled.
- Livio the Double Fang: A character that only appears in the manga. He's Wolfwood's replacement once he dies. Wolfwood's childhood friend, he becomes evil thanks to his psychotic split personality, Razlo. However, once Wolfwood dies, he learns to control Razlo to help him fight, and joins Vash to help stop Knives and the Gung-Ho guns.
- Rem Saverem: Vash's adoptive mother who died long ago, but Vash still can't get over it so he whines a lot about her. Incredible strong willed and inspiring. The anime does her little justice.
- Elendira the Crimsonnail: One of the stranger characters, Elendira the Crimsonnail is a transvestite (or a trans woman, it's unclear) who also happens to have a crush on Knives. They have a crossbow that shoots giant nails to impale any target. Only appears in the manga.
- Midvalley the Hornfreak: Midvalley the Hornfreak is candidate for villain with the weirdest weapon of all time. He is a musician that plays a killer saxophone. Literally. He plays a sax that kills people with its soundwaves.
- Rai-Dei the Blade: Another villain. He is a samurai with a gun that shoots swords. Fuck yeah! He's most notable for saying the line "Is this some sort of Christian magic?".
