Rocko's Modern Life is an American animated series created by Joe Murray. The show aired for four seasons between 1993 and 1996 on Nickelodeon. Rocko's Modern Life is based around the surreal, parodic adventures of an anthropomorphic, Australian-immigrant wallaby named Rocko, and his new life in the city of O-Town. The show explores his American life as well as the lives of his friends: the gluttonous steer Heffer, the neurotic turtle Filburt, and Rocko's faithful dog, Spunky. The show is laden with adult humor, including double entendres, innuendos, and satirical social commentary.
Characters[edit]
- Rocko - Rocko is a wallaby who moves away from Australia and into an American neighborhood. He is paranoid and obsessed with cleanliness while also lovable. He is mostly a comic store employee, but has also spent time as a runway underwear model and an animator.
- Heffer - Rocko's fat cow friend who was raised by civilized wolves. He's annoying and loud. He has had the most jobs including security guard, golf course greens-keeper, coffee shop barista, animator, and Chewey Chicken employee.
- Filbert - Filburt is Rocko's other best friend, but sometimes his conditions can get in the way of his relationship. He is also friends with Heffer. Filburt enjoys quiet nights at home, but sometimes it bothers him to be alone. Filburt's skin is turquoise. He wears blue glasses and a green shell with turquisoe ovals on the shell. He wears light green pants and yellow shirt. It was established in one episode that he is a professional photographer. He has also spent time as a lounge singer, a clerk for the DMV and an animator.
- The Bigheads - Ed and Bev Bighead are Rocko's next-door neighbors; Ed Bighead hates Rocko and his friends with a passion while Bev tends to act a bit more neighborly towards them, one time to the point where Bev borderline seduced Rocko out of neglect at home. Mr. Bighead works for Conglomo as an executive in many departments and Mrs. Bighead is a housewife who spent a week as a Conglomo top executive.
- Spunky - Rocko's pet dog. Nothing much to say.
- Dr. Hutchison- She is Filburt's significant other, a cat with a hook for a hand. She worked as a dentist when she and Filburt first met, and then as a surgeon, a pharmacist, and in veterinary care. Later in the series, she and Filburt got married and had four kids, whom Heffer helped hatch from a single egg. Fun fact: the reason Dr. Hutchison was ever created was because network execs wanted Joe Murray to add a female character to the cast and for him to "give her a hook." Joe knew they were being figurative but he gave her an actual hook anyway out of pure spite.

- In the first two seasons, the diner where the characters always eat is "Chokey Chicken", which has a giant choking chicken as a mascot. In the third season, "Chokey Chicken" became "Chewy Chicken". There are many hidden sexual references in Rocko's Modern Life, and this was one of the more blatant ones. It was changed because the show is designed for a young audience.
