Wikipedia also has an article about Sony Vegas.

Sony Vegas is a very popular video editor used to make YouTube Poop videos. It is used by an enormous array of poopers; so many in fact that a list of community members who do not use this is smaller (usually, these people are WMM masters or Adobe Premiere users). Was originally made by Sonic Foundry under the names VideoFactory and Screenblast until Sony bought them.

BEHOLD!

Advantages

Over Windows Movie Maker

  • Reversing
  • More visual customization. (Movie Maker can have these but it requires plugins.)
  • Audio effects (Pan, Chorus, Reverb, Pitch Shift, etc.) Various VST effects can be added to Sony Vegas if they are compatible.
  • Program is very responsive. WMM on the other hand requires a lot of time between each edit or it will crash.
  • Generated Media
  • Lady parts

Over Adobe Premiere

  • Doesn't lock up or crash as much
  • Can be run on less powerful computers
  • Is much better at masking and pitch shifting

Differences Between Versions of Vegas

Sonic Foundry Vegas 1

  • Audio only editor.
  • Will accept mov's and avi's but does not allow editing of them.

Sonic Foundry Vegas Video 2

  • Video and Audio editing.
  • Accepts GIF,MOV,JPG,PNG,WAV,MP3,Uncompressed AVI.
  • Hard to use but not impossible.

Sonic Foundry Vegas Video 3

  • First Vegas to accept WMV.
  • NO REVERSE OR MASKING.
  • Still doesn't support many files

Sony Vegas 4

  • FIRST Vegas ever branded as a SONY product.
  • Accepts a pretty wide array of formats.
  • NO REVERSE OR MASKING.
  • GREAT for slow computers and simplistic poopers who don't use reverse much.

Sony Vegas 5

  • A widely used Editor for poops in the early days.
  • Fantastic for slow computers.
  • Accepts all basic formats
  • AND ACCEPTS MP4's! NONE OF THAT GREEN GLITCHING CRAP!
  • First Vegas to have Reversing and Masking.
  • Great for custom effects as it is the MOST STABLE of all Vegas products.
  • Accepts a wide variety of custom VST's and video effects (Wax, NewBlueFX, Boris, etc.)

Sony Vegas 6

  • A dud of the above bunch.
  • Masking is there but MP4 support is gone, and so is a bit of custom effect support.
  • Not terrible just nothing special.
  • LAST Vegas to support Wax 2.0 effects.

Sony Vegas 7

  • One of the most popular Vegases for YouTube Poops.
  • Praised for being the first Vegas to feature the timeline ON THE BOTTOM as opposed to the top for a more familiar interface.
  • Its features are akin to Vegas 6 however still accepts some custom effects.
  • Hardly any AVI Support.
  • Works great on computers with a fast single core or a slow dual core CPU.

Sony Vegas Pro 8

  • First Vegas to obtain the name Pro.
  • Everything 7 was and MORE.
  • Accepts way more custom effects (Probably as much as 5)
  • Very stable, Powerful as hell.
  • Adds a few more stock effects to the list.
  • Moderate AVI Support. MP4 support has returned.
  • Uses more system resources than 7 and under. 2ghz or up Dual Core CPU recommended. If you have the computer to run it and you want a Vegas that does EVERYTHING, 8 is the way to go.
  • First Vegas to offer a built in YouTube uploader.

Sony Vegas Pro 9

  • Accepts more AVI's than 8 and 7 and has a few more stock effects.
  • Has a new color scheme for the layout.
  • New advanced stretching feature that makes stretched out audio files sound better and more organic.
  • 9 pro is resource hog, glitchy, crashes constantly, runs a shitload of programs along with it when it comes on that slow your computer to a crawl. Fast computer recommended.

Sony Vegas Pro 10a and 10e

  • Vegas 10a is quite possibly the WORST Vegas ever made. Buggy, crashes more.
  • AVI support is lower or maybe it just keeps crashing.
  • Higher system requirements.
  • Has a few more effects but good luck trying to use them. Luckily they're on 11 too.
  • 10a was the first build and was pretty much unusable. A few months later Sony released 10e which was supposed to fix many of the bugs and some report it is more stable than 10a.
  • First Vegas to offer GPU Rendering HOWEVER it only worked on Sony's AVC format and even then it barely ever worked and only works on the newest graphics cards.
  • Only recommended if you want Vegas 11's effects and use Windows XP.

Sony Vegas 11

  • Fixes EVERYTHING Sony broke on 10.
  • AVI support has risen.
  • GPU rendering now works on everything. It now offers GPU ACCELERATION for the whole editor making Vegas 11 the fastest and most versatile Vegas of all right out of the box.
  • Has all the effects 10 had only now THEY WORK.
  • Some of the newer effects have new redesigned windows to adjust the effects which are cool.
  • Offers a new Generated Text effect which gives you WAY more customization for your text. Works wonders.
  • HOWEVER. this awesomeness all comes at a price. Fast computer with a hot dual core or a slow quad core and THE NEWEST GPU POSSIBLE recommended.
  • WORKS IN WINDOWS 7 ONLY.

Sony Vegas 12

  • Vegas can now convert veg files to/from other project files from Adobe Premiere CS6, After Effects CS6, Final Cut Pro 7, AvidProTools 10, and DaVinci Resolve 8.
  • Improved masking tools and the ability to mask effects.
  • Docking panels vertically.
  • They added bigger icons around video tracks so you can fade, stretch, and modify tracks easier in the timeline (actually does help).
  • Even more improved GPU Acceleration, which makes everything seems to run smooth and seamless.
  • It doesn't take a degree from NASA to crack. There's a ONE CLICK PATCH for it that does all that complicated shit for you.
  • ONLY WORKS WITH WINDOWS 7 64 BIT OR WINDOWS 8. Sorry again Windows XP guys, but I'm afraid it's finally dead.

Movie Studio/Platinum

  • These are the Vegases you'll find at any office supply store or Best Buy and they normally run anywhere to $40 to $120 depending on their features.

The Good?

  • Provides tutorials and online help, offers an "Upload straight to YouTube" button with the basic presets.
  • Basically everything pro versions have but dumbed down for home users including descriptions of most functions right under things.
  • Good for some one just learning Vegas.
  • Makes using the pro versions a breeze afterwards.

The Bad?

  • Only offers you 4 video tracks and 4 audio tracks (sometimes 10 in later versions) to work with. For some one who makes simple poops this shouldn't be a problem but for tennisers and visual gag poopers it's a pain in the ass.
  • Doesn't include a few effects.
  • Uses its own project format instead of the usual VEG file. So, movie studio files are not compatible with Vegas Pro.

HOWEVER, since you can buy it from a store, as long as you have enough rubies, there's no need to crack so no looking over your shoulder. At least for the 5-10

Where to Find

Sony Vegas can be obtained legally through websites like eBay or Amazon, or possibly at various software retailers.

There is also the option of downloading it but, uh... That's technically piracy. (Though that doesn't stop YouChew's media library from having plenty of free downloads for it...)

Tools and Tips

If you are using Sony Vegas for the first time you may find the software to be complicated and frustrating. Take a look at The Vegas FAQ Thread for tutorials and tips on every thing you need to know. Down below are a few things you can try for fun.

  • Go to options and turn off Quantitize to Frames. This will allow you to make stutters less than a frame. As well as making the clip buzz.
  • Importing an MP4 into Sony Vegas can result in a very nice flickering effect. This is just having fun with a glitch.
  • G Major can be done by simply duplicating a subclip into, say 4 copies, and then changing the pitch of each subclip exponentially.
  • The ability to bypass motion blur. Ever annoyed by how you can't actually see something moving smoothly in your final video?

Where you see the track number on the timeline, over to the right you will see a button that says "Bypass motion blur". This will make each individual frame of the video seen and recognizable. With bypass motion blur it doesn't matter if your source is 12fps and if your project is 30fps. It'll be fine and in-between movements won't be hindered. This is only recommended for a source that is in good quality and was just made. If this doesn't work just right click on your clip in the timeline and press properties. By default it will be set to "smart re-sample", but that's awful. What you wanna do is set it to "disable resample".

  • Source replacement! This allows you to throw any file in place of any source that is missing. It doesn't have to be the same file and it will work error-free. Just move your source to another folder and Vegas will ask for the file or a replacement.

Notable Sony Vegas Users

A large number of poopers use Sony Vegas. But hey, here's a selection:

Actually, let's stop while we're young.
