The edited or irregular genetical layout of these people (or creatures or plants) caused them to become mutated and adopt strange new strengths, affected their physical appearances, or just gave them the ability to pop metal out of their knuckles. Most are created by satanists, Nazis, or mad scientists. Diseases, infections, or radioactive materials can cause can mutations too.
