The autobahns were first built in the 1920s and 1930s, and were later supported by Adolf Hitler as an infrastructure of the German people.
They were the inspiration for the modern system of highways, especially the Interstate Highway system (which Dwight D. Eisenhower signed in to law in 1956, inspired by the autobahns that he saw during World War II).
