Scooby-Doo is a cartoon franchise created under Hanna-Barbera in 1969. It focuses on the exploits of four hippie teenagers who drive around in a van looking for mysteries to solve. Accompanying them is a constantly-fightened Great Dane who is also the title character, Scooby-Doo, who can only be talked into doing something for the gang if promised a Scooby Snack. However, just about every mystery these guys get on their hands turns out to be a "crime" perpetrated by some guy whose idea of an evil plot is putting on a monster costume and chasing these "meddling kids" around.
Despite the fact that it was pretty much the same thing happening every episode, the Scooby-Doo cartoon series managed to last for quite a few seasons, albeit having its name changed several dozen times over the course of its run. In a piece of irony, fans actually got upset whenever something was done to change the show's formula, such as the introductions of new characters, like Scooby's retarded brother Scooby-Dum in 1976, and his fiesty nephew Scrappy-Doo in 1979 (the latter of whom apparently turned evil around 2001).
These days, Scooby-Doo is, ironically, the only Hanna-Barbera frachise that continues to be featured in new productions, all of which have been made under Warner Bros., who now owns Hanna-Barbera. The new shows and movies that Warner Bros. Animation has made with the Scooby-Doo characters have greatly annoyed many fans of the studio, because it shows that Warner Bros. is clearly milking cash out of a franchise they didn't create while turning their backs on their own creations, like Freakazoid and Histeria.
