Metal Gear Rising: Revengence was a video game announced by Konami in 2009 under the title Metal Gear Solid: Rising. It was originally going to tell the story of how Raiden became a cyborg ninja in the first place between Metal Gear Solid 2 and Metal Gear Solid 4. Due to Kojima thinking that it would never be completed, he cancelled the game in secret the following year in late 2010.

Fastforward to December 2011 and Platinum Games' gave the game their Platinum touch and revived the game's development, and changed its gameplay direction to being more in-line with Platinum's other works such as Bayonetta and Vanquish, and with less of an emphasis on stealth like the original game had envisioned. The game was also retitled to Metal Gear Rising: Revengence, and its place in the timeline changed to being four years following Metal Gear Solid 4. Thankfully however, thanks to the game's status as a spin-off, you can drop into the game without any knowledge of Metal Gear prior to it, and still enjoy it regardless.
